Yes, This is going to hurt!
My first workout of the year
Yes, you heard correct. Between fighting off a virus and slipping a disk in my neck on New Year’s Eve.
This past Saturday was my first “Real” workout, where I felt as though I could push myself. I had been doing mobility and some light body weight movements but that was it.
And even though I have had 1000’s of workouts in my life
I found my mind moving away from the pain of the workout
I was trying to talk myself out of pushing
My neck and back felt fine, it wasn’t a case of trying to just be conservative
I was just flat out trying to move away from the pain.
It’s funny how getting away from the pain for the first 2 weeks of the year started to weaken my mindset.
*************************************
It is in our DNA to stay away from pain
We are raised to avoid pain
“Don’t touch that”
“Be careful you will fall”
“Don’t eat that”
All the things our parents said to us and we have said to our kids.
We are built to protect, preserve, be comfortable.
The unfortunate part about being comfortable we get worse at everything
We get softer both mentally and physically
**************************************
So, if you are waiting in the wings
or
Maybe you started working out (kind of)
But you haven’t exactly stepped into the pain
I get it
It isn’t easy to do the things that you know are going to be uncomfortable
But consider this
If you avoid something like training
What else are you avoiding?
That project at work
Those phone calls to unhappy customers
Conversations with your kids
Conversations with your spouse
Eating cleaner foods
You know what I reminded myself of on Saturday?
It isn’t as bad as I thought
I felt sooooooo much better Saturday and Sunday after training
It gave me a more positive outlook
It has brought me to embrace a whole handful of challenges ahead of me this week.
Instead of avoiding them I am excited to knock them out and get better.
So, what PAIN are you going to embrace this week?
Quit avoiding it
Move to it
Endure it
Get better from it!
